Marianne Baudouin Lie is a performing cellist and chamber musician. In 2018, she completed her PhD in artistic research at the Department of Music, NTNU. She is a strong advocate for contemporary music and enjoys working across genres. She is active in Alpaca Ensemble, Trondheim Sinfonietta, Trondheimsolistene, and Trondheim Jazz Ensemble, and together with Alpaca Ensemble, she received the “Performer of the Year 2020” award from the Norwegian Composers’ Association.
Her education, which includes baroque cello, composition, and a Master’s degree in chamber music, was completed at the Royal College of Music in London, the Academy of Music and Drama in Gothenburg, Barratt Due Institute of Music, and NTNU Conservatory of Music, where she is currently employed. She has served as the artistic director of the Trondheim International Chamber Music Competition and is chair of the board of Trondheim Sinfonietta.
Lie won several awards during her studies in the UK and worked as a String Department Assistant at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama in Cardiff, Wales, from 1999–2001, before establishing herself as a freelance musician based in Trondheim. Her discography includes numerous releases spanning contemporary music, classical, and crossover projects with Alpaca Ensemble, Trondheimsolistene, Trondheim Jazz Orchestra, and Trondheim Sinfonietta, as well as two solo albums. Her first solo album, Khipukamayuk, featuring music by Lene Grenager, was nominated for a Spellemann Award in 2016, and the album featuring the cello concerto Marmæle by Jon Øivind Ness was nominated in 2022.
Marianne performs both as a soloist and in various ensembles. She also teaches, mentors, and instructs Tae Kwon Do.
