Martin Smidt is a composer and drummer. He has written numerous commissioned works for theatres, ensembles, choirs, and festivals. He has received both the Spellemann Award and the Alarm Prize with his performing ensembles and has undertaken interdisciplinary projects in collaboration with dance, video, installation, and visual arts. He is also the managing director of the Rotvoll Artist Collective.

After composing for around 30 full-length theatre and music theatre productions across various genres, he is experienced in working collaboratively and tailoring music to specific commissions, while maintaining his own musical voice. Examples of previous clients include Cirka Teater, Oslo Nye Teater, Riksteatret, the Norwegian Constitution Jubilee, Olavsfestdagene, NTNU, Petrusjka Teater, Dekkoart, Trøndelag Teater, Turneteatret i Trøndelag, Maskineriet (Denmark), Teater Ibsen, Sverresborg Folk Museum, Billuca Ensemble, Atelier Ilsvika, Nidaros Cathedral Music Festival, and St. Olavs Hospital.

Musician

As both a composer and percussionist, he is focused on sound. He often sets up unconventional drum kits combining percussion instruments, bells, found objects, and electronics with traditional drums. He has a background in jazz, chamber music, world music, and pop/rock, performing with ensembles such as Dadafon, Billuca Ensemble, Bárut Trilobitt, and projects organized by Rikskonsertene and DKS. He has toured extensively in many countries and has also studied drumming in Ghana.
