Ragnhild Faanes is from Trondheim and trained at the Norwegian Academy of Music, studying saxophone with Knut Riisnæs and flute with Ørnulf Guldbrandsen. She worked for 14 years as a regional musician with Musikk i Finnmark and has been based in Trondheim since 2002.
She plays saxophone and flute across many styles—including jazz, Afro, salsa, funk, musical theatre, joik, and Irish music. She has performed in over 2,000 concerts for the Norwegian Concert Institute (Rikskonsertene) and school concerts (DKS), spending the last 20 years frequently collaborating with Cirka Teater and the quartet Jezz.
Faanes leads and directs a big band, teaches saxophone and improvisation, and composes music for both small ensembles and big bands. Her compositions have been commissioned by the Norwegian Jazz Forum, Cirka Teater, and Stellaris Dance Theatre.
